So you’ve started a Disaster
Supplies Kit but you can include more then the basic items. Here are some more unusual items to
include: · Car
charger for your cell phone. If power is out, this might be the only way to
recharge it. Don’t forget to have a
list of important telephone numbers. · Get an
ordinary analog phone that plugs into a phone jack in your home; cordless
phones won't work when electrical lines are down. · Extra
contact lenses, eyeglasses and sunglasses. · Other
batteries for such things as hearing-aids, a digital camera, or handheld
games such as GameBoys. · Appropriate
clothes for after the storm (it may be sunny & hot, or it may rain): o
closed-toe shoes, o
several changes of dry socks, o
rain gear, o
hat to
wear in the sun. · Spray
paint for painting your insurance carrier's name on your house so roving
adjusters know who you are; and for painting your address. · Flat
fixer for tires (streets may be full of glass, sharp rubble). · A road
map (major roads may be closed or clogged, you may
need to find an alternate route using back roads). · Work
gloves (to pick up broken glass). · Fire
extinguisher (ABC rated). · Laundry
detergent and bucket (to wash clothes until the power comes back). · Bleach
for disinfecting (without lemon or any additives). Also hand sanitizer. · Games,
books, playing cards. · Tools
(hammer, wrenches, screw drivers, nails, saw, squeegee on long handle) and
the universal repair tool - duct tape. · Camera and film. · Back-up
disks of your home computer files. · Outdoor
extension cords. · Mosquito repellent and/or insect spray. Termite bait and ant poison. · Personal
needs items. Toothbrushing
pads (handy when water is in short supply). · Power
Alternatives - Some people buy generators, an alternative would be to buy a
top of the line Uninterruptible Power Supply, a.k.a. UPS. These handy little boxes (with a large
battery inside) normally go between your computer and the AC wall outlet to
provide hours of computer capability.
But they can also run other devices like a TV or radio for many hours. |
